Library’s Movie Night Comes to an End Due to Copyright Infringement

2:44 pm Reference

Last year our library began holding a monthly movie night.  The featured movie was one that was recently released on DVD, so that helped to attract a large audience of young and old alike.  Not to mention that the movie, along with fresh popped popcorn, was free.  Where else can you find a bargain like that today?  This provided a great opportunity for families to take their children to see a movie without it costing an arm and a leg.  But as with all good things, movie night has now come to an end.  All because the movie makers are charging a $200 fee to show the film to the public and the library cannot afford that.  The movies are copyrighted and that is all it takes to stop any public showing unless permission is granted.  This is the type of situation that is governed by the World Intellectual Property Organization.
